Goodbye Columbus I do not get this book. I tried. I read it carefully, thinking perhaps I was just missing something. When it was over, I immediately asked a friend why he had liked it. He explained, but I could not see the book that he saw. The book I read was just a story. Philip Roth's reputation had lead me to believe the book would be offensive or majestic, something big anyway. I thought I would fume over the book and have to grudgingly admit it was an Important Book. Instead I found it predictable. Of course their relationship is doomed. They barely liked each other to begin with. She's spoiled and bored, he's kind of a jerk and looking for an up in status. Of course it's not going to work between the two. So when the final scene came about, my only thought was "What took them so long?" The tragedy of the story would have been there if the two had decided to stay together. A relationship that never really was a relationship is not much of a story. We've all had those. They barely affected our lives at all. Maybe it's because I'm female that I don't get it? Or my Methodist Whatever it is, I am disappointed. I expected a lot coming from Roth and ended up bored. It's a short book and it took me ages to read. It's hard to sit down a read a book when the characters are as boring and obvious as these. I would have reread it to see if that helped if I thought I could get through it. I'm sorry. It just did nothing for me. ![]()
